Sweet and Spicy Sauce

Hey guys-

No review today, sadly, just a really simple Crockpot recipe I just made.

The recipe is:

1/2 cup maple syrup
1 jar (12 oz) of grape jelly
12 oz (over 2/3 of a bottle) of Siracha chilli sauce
1 lb of meatballs

Combine in Crockpot, cook that sonofabitch for 2-3 hours on high.

So the meatballs are not the special part of this recipe- I just tried replacing it with rice (didn’t work) but the sauce is very interesting for a mere three ingredients.  The flavor is surprisingly complex for such a basic recipe and for such basic ingredients- it starts with a very strong sweet flavor from the syrup and jelly, which lasts for about a second, and then BAM! You’re hit with a strong spicy flavor.  A little too spicy.  While the taste is good, I’m playing around with some ideas on how to take a little bit of the edge off of both major tastes- it’s a little too sweet and a little too spicy.  Straight up, I need to come up with an idea to thin it, but I don’t yet know what.  Foodies on the interwebs, give me an idea!  I’ll update this post later on if I find an improved recipe.
