Delilah Dirk: A review of a comic that is on the web.

And yet, I would not call it a webcomic.

Hello everyone, Zip! here.  How’s everyone doing?

As I mentioned in my last post, today’s review is going to be of a graphic novella whose first story arc is available for free online.  Delilah Dirk and the Turkish Lieutenant, by Tony Cliff, follows Selim, a youthful Turkish lieutenant (hence the title) back during the Ottoman Empire.  He’s a wiry kind of guy, fairly lean and not a lot of meat/muscle on him, but clearly his rank was achieved through the applied use of his brains.  Selim carries himself to a high standard of honor, and takes pride in his rank, his station, and, most importantly, his tea.  One fateful day, however, the lord commanding him requests an English speaker to interrogate a prisoner, in which Selim really learns the meaning of the phrase, “being in the wrong place at the wrong time.”  Selim is tasked with interrogating Delilah Dirk, a woman of extraordinary circumstances.  A escape artist, master swordsman, acrobat, member of three royal courts, Delilah Dirk is a powerful persona.  She’s smart, fearless, deadly, and, if you’ve got it, she wants your gold.  That combination quickly leads to trouble, and Selim finds himself accused of treason and on the executioner’s block.  However, the daring and dashing Deliliah Dirk dispatches the death-dealing dastards with a deft and dexterous dagger… sword.  Damned Ds.  Anywho, Selim ultimately chooses to adventure with Delilah over a certain death at the hands of the Constantinople lord, and the story really picks up from there.  It’s a classic historical fiction/adventure kind of deal.  The story is very fast paced, and more often than not involves Delilah stealing something valuable, then everyone running away really quickly.  It’s a blast to read, though, with a lot of humor and excitement, and while the characters fall into some pretty general archetypes, they’re still very quirky characters and are great vehicles for the story.  I’m also a fan of the art, which, while not exceptional, is still great.

Delilah Dirk and the Turkish Lieutenant is available right now, for free, at this link.  Currently, there are only 2 Delilah Dirk stories available, being The Turkish Lieutenant, which is available online, or The Seeds of Good Fortune, which is available via order only.  The Turkish Lieutenant boasts 4 full color chapters (and one full color prologue).

At any rate, that’s all I’ve got time for, back to the grindstone.

See you all soon!
